Merkel challenger backs Macron's idea for euro zone budget

German Social Democrat (SPD) leader Martin Schulz, who will run against Chancellor Angela Merkel in a September election, has backed French president-elect Emmanuel Macron's idea of a common budget for euro zone states to fund investment.

"If the euro group states are to tackle things together, joint budget financing would be sensible," Schulz told Die Zeit newspaper.
